Art Line – A Baltic collaboration
A catalogue with two lives – printed and OnlineThe essays in the catalogue reflect upon the wide range of art projects executed within the multi-year project Art Line(2011-2014) where fourteen Baltic institutions worked collaboratatively to investigate and challenge the concepts of public space, particularily the relationship between the digital and the physical realms. The catalogue responds to the mixed media content of the project and hence exists in two formats, in print and in an extended digital version with more essays and artworks included. In the online catalogue the visitor has access to Art Online, videos, sound works, lectures, documentaries and to an online gallery exhibition about the storytelling project ‘Telling the Baltic.’ An artistic rendering of all projects, ‘A Message From Another Shore’ by Nicola Bergstrőm Hansen concludes the project in the form of a playful examination of the visual traces of creativity and collaboration.

Art in our public spaces, both in the digital and within the ‘real’ venues, has been one of the overarching topics as well as experiments in art and digital technologies within the international collaboration Art Line. The project itself derived from the need for a stronger cultural infrastructure in the Baltic region. Art Line was a long-term interdisciplinary cooperation anchored in 14 art institutions and academies and as a result had created a collaborative platform between Poland, Sweden, Germany, Lithuania and Russia.

Art Line worked on different arenas and locations to meet new audiences through workshops, exhibitions, public space projects, interactive art works, online projects, contests, storytelling activities, conferences and workshops about art and science, art and technology, art and digital media and about art in public space. Artists showed works in gallery/museum settings & in re-located settings at other types of museums and in technology parks. Works were presented outside of the gallery and museum context in the public spaces of our cities: in housing areas; in parks, outside shopping centers and in more unconventional settings: on the sea; by the seafront, as art works on our website and on smart phones or tablets; Art Online and the Mobile Art Applications and in crossmedia-projects combining digital and real space: as artists’ experiments in technology laboratories on the ferries moving between Sweden and Poland, and in arenas beyond How often does a ferry turn into an art gallery, and how often does an art gallery cast off and leave its’ comfort zones to travel beyond its walls?

The European Commission appointed Art Line a Flagship project, and it is now part of the Action Plan for the Baltic Sea Strategy. Art Line is seen as a high quality project with a focus on contemporary art and digital media technologies. The initial project period was 2011-2014, but the network will be developed geographically and conceptually during this year.

The catalogue contains texts by art critics, curators, artists and researchers: Michaela Crimmin, Julia Draganovic, Michał Bieniek, Kuba Szreder, Julita Wójcik, Jacob Lillemose, Ryszard W. Kluszczyński, Agnieszka Wołodźko, Bettina Pelz, Torun Ekstrand, Catharina Gabrielsson, Oscar Guermouche, Agnieszka Kulazinska, Gernot Wolfram, Martin Schibli, Ryszard W.

Look at the changing light. Listen to the colours.

Jan Chwałczyk’s “Sunlight Reactor” sculpture was unveiled in 2013 as part of the ART LINE project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the 2007-2013 South Baltic Cross-Border Cooperation Program.

Located in Dolinka Park in Elbląg (Poland), the work belongs to the city’s open-air gallery of spatial forms.

The Sunlight Reactor is a unique light trap. Its essential structural element is a white metal screen on which sunrays are projected after bouncing off the multi-colour frame coated with reflective paint. The graphic effect of colour blending on the screen surface depends on the position of the sun and season of the year. However, in his work Chwałczyk does not only rely on painterly effects –the Sunlight Reactor is also (or perhaps primarily) a sculpture situated in a public space. Unifying the values characteristic of both painting and sculpture, this artwork defies unequivocal genre-based classification.

Now you can see the colours of the sculpture everywhere around the world. Thanks to the application prepared by Maciej Wojnicki you can not only observe (according to the sunlight) the colour changes, but also listen to the colours! The lightwave lenght has beed changed into the soundwave frequency!

Observe the colours and listen to it here:

Join us in a live broadcast on Bambuser*! In connection to his upcoming exhibition in Ronneby Kulturcentrum, Paetrick Schmidt will conduct a workshop, Monday, March 24. During this workshop he will participate in a live broadcast from Kulturcentrum. Please join us! Time: cirka 1 – 2 pm.

Paetrick Schmidt is childishly fond of surprises, his art resembles a live theater. He switches constantly between different approaches, three-dimensional objects, assembly in the form of collage, the clean drawing and using the computer as a tool. Patrick Schmidt lives and works in Wismar, Germany. His next exhibition opens Saturday March 29 in Ronneby.

Augmented Reality and Playing with History
A Workshop for EU Cooperation Day
September 30th (and October 14), at Blekinge Museum and historical Karlskrona locations

On September 30th, in celebration of EU Cooperation Day, students in the Digital Culture and Communication Program at Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, in collaboration with local high school students in Karlskrona, will meet in a practical hands-on workshop to explore the ways that history may be re-imagined using mixed media applications and tools, including Augmented Reality. Working with an historian and photo archivist from Blekinge Museum, along with BTH Digital Culture faculty, they will use smart phones, tablets, and old photographs of the city spaces and architecture to blend fact and fiction and re-imagine the past. How can historical photographs and digital images come together to reveal the “ghosts” of the past living among us? How can we re-map historical spaces using user-experiences of spaces and places as central to learning our cultural heritage? How can we play with the past to discover, uncover, and recover something new? These are our goals as we move forward and work together to explore our past and present in Karlskrona.

The first workshop will be followed up with other collaborations and results will be posted on the Art Line website, so check back for further information.

presents the international project “Telling the Baltic” which had the Baltic Sea and storytelling in focus.

Museums, Art galleries and Universities collected stories from fishermen, lighthouse keepers, ferry staff, sailors, islanders and dockworkers around the Baltic sea. More than 100 people were interviewed.

Two workshops and a performance will take place in Galeria EL in early March.

During the workshops we will try to reproduce the image of the “Sun light reactor” – Jan Chwałczyk’s sculpture, created last year. We will create copy of the copy, by working with the multi-converted image.

Using cameras, we will work with colour – dominated vision. At the same time, we will learn to create hand-made video-mixer, that will enable us to work life with already prepared visual materials. It will be an attempt of DIY – analogue work, without using the computer.

During sound workshops we will create the sound connected to the video prepared during video workshops. Sound will be based on image changes. Image will be sort of a script for the sound actions.

Workshops will end with live – performance in Gallery EL, on March 8th, at 18.00.

Visual workshop with Ludomir Franczak
5-8 March, 2014

Sound workshop with Marcin Dymiter
7 – 8 March, 2014
